Faced with the widespread use of magic—particularly in Cæris, but also in all the major cities of the world—the High Council felt compelled to act. That is why the Red Moon exists.
The Red Moon, a militia composed of military personnel and law enforcement officers, has full authority to maintain order and monitor the misuse of magic. The High Council fears a return of the Æther winds. It is therefore essential to channel the entropy generated by the use of magical abilities in each city. A curfew, in particular, ensures a reduction in magical activity.
The Red Moon is under the authority of the provost, who is appointed by the High Council. The militia’s primary duty is to ensure that residents observe the curfew, are in good standing, and have proper access to the city’s various zones according to their rank.
These districts are separated by watch posts, and at each one, a knight commands the sergeants, guards, militiamen, scouts, and lookouts. Depending on the district, the knights are often assisted by informants drawn from the ranks of the bourgeoisie, merchants, artisans, and doctors. Together, they form the standing guard.
A unit consists mostly of a sergeant, guards, and a scout. During their patrols, the units check that the lookouts are at their posts in the watchtowers and that all is well. It is not uncommon to see the presence of a few assassins—or worse, certain purgers accompanied by their heralds—wandering the darkest streets of Cæris.
Every night, patrols along the city walls and in the slums ensure security both inside and outside the city and prevent skirmishes between rival guilds. The militia’s nighttime operations are known for being very aggressive and usually end in bloodshed.
